5 Tips For An Awesome Senior Portrait Session

Posted in: Senior Session, Session Tips

1. Find a photographer who is right for you: Let’s face it, when it comes to choosing a photographer there are so many options out there, maybe even too many. Every photographer has their own shooting style and most specialize in a branch of photographer. Make sure to take some time and look into the different photographers in the area. Look at images that they have taken and see if their style matches what you are looking for. Be sure to inquire about what is included in their sessions and what type of products they offer, and even consider scheduling a time to meet up with them in person so that you get to know their personality and talk about any questions or concerns that you may have. Taking the time to do a little research will not only help you find a photographer that you are comfortable working with, but will help ensure that you are happy with your images.

2. Choose outfits that are flattering, but comfortable: Choosing what to wear can be one of the most stressful parts of a senior portrait session, but it doesn’t have to be! I always encourage my clients to pick outfits that give them confidence and are comfortable. The last thing that you want to do is wear an outfit that you end up fidgeting with and worrying about how it makes you look the entire time. As you choose what to wear, think about the location(s) of the session,  your personality and interests, and the overall style (casual, formal, themed) that you are hoping to achieve in your images. Many photographers will allow you to bring a few different outfits to the session and would be happy to give you advice on what looks will work best.  It is always good to have variety. Bring a mix of clothes that are timeless and trendy, casual and formal, solids and patterns/ textures, and definitely play with accessories. Also, think about wearing clothes that you can sit, stand and walk around in comfortably. The point of this session is to express WHO YOU ARE and  to have FUN!

3. Consider having your hair and makeup done by a professional: I don’t know how many times I have looked back on photos that were taken of me in the past and asked myself what in the world was I thinking when I did my hair and makeup. I know that many girls are super talented when it comes to this area, but for those of us who aren’t as gifted or are nervous , using a professional hairstylist and makeup artist can be a HUGE relief and will help you create a look that is flattering and timeless. Not only is it one less thing to worry about, but it’s fun to have a little special treatment every once in a while!

4.  Tell your photographer if you have any concerns: Whether you are concerned about what to wear or insecure about a certain feature, letting your photographer know what you are worried about can make a HUGE difference in how happy you are with the end result. Your photographer is there to give you direction and to make sure that you look and feel your best.

5. BREATHE: Once you arrive at your session, take a deep breathe and enjoy the next couple of hours.  You have picked the right photographer, you look AMAZING, and you have told your photographer about your concerns, so there is nothing left to worry about. Once you relax your images will look even better!
